The Freebox Ultra manages two WiFi 6E bands and one WiFi 7 band depending on the chosen configuration. The password displayed on the physical label of the Server corresponds to the key generated at the first startup, not necessarily to the one currently active on the network. This distinction causes most connection errors after a forgotten key change.
Default key and active key on Freebox Ultra: two distinct realities
The label stuck under the Server box of the Freebox Ultra displays the SSID and the factory-generated WPA key. As soon as an administrator changes the WiFi password (via Freebox Connect, Freebox OS, or the subscriber area), the physical label becomes obsolete. The box does not update itself.
We regularly observe users entering the key printed under the box after a change made months earlier. The connection refusal is not a hardware issue; it is a discrepancy between the key stored on the router side and the one read on the plastic.
To find out where the actually active Freebox WiFi password is located, you need to query the Server’s firmware or use the mobile app, never rely solely on the label.
Freebox Connect: access the active WiFi password in seconds
The Freebox Connect app (available on Android and iOS) remains the most reliable method to display the key actually used by the network. It synchronizes directly with the Server’s firmware, even after several successive password changes.
Access path in the app
- Open Freebox Connect, log in with the box’s administrator account.
- Go to the “WiFi Network” section from the home screen.
- The active password is displayed in clear text, with the option to copy or share it via QR code.
The QR code generated by the app (or displayed directly on the Server’s screen by pressing the physical button located under the box) allows a guest to connect without ever seeing the key in clear text. The password is not transmitted to the scanning device, only the network profile is injected into the WiFi settings of the terminal.
This method eliminates the risk of a guest noting down the key or sharing it later. For a home network shared with frequent visitors, this is the cleanest approach from a security standpoint.
Freebox OS and subscriber area: two other paths to the WiFi password
Freebox OS (accessible via mafreebox.freebox.fr from a browser connected to the local network) provides access to the complete WiFi configuration. The password appears in the WiFi Settings section, under the Personal Network tab. You must be connected via cable or already associated with the network to reach this interface, which poses a chicken-and-egg problem when the key is precisely lost.
The Free subscriber area (free.fr/moncompte) offers an alternative from any device connected to the Internet, including 4G/5G. The WiFi key is visible there after authentication with the Freebox identifier and the account password. We recommend this route when no device is already connected to the local network of the box.

Change the WiFi password on Freebox Ultra without losing your connected devices
Any device already paired will be disconnected after a key change. Smartphones, tablets, connected objects, network printers: each will need to re-enter the new password. In a household equipped with many IoT devices, this operation can take time.
Before changing the key, we recommend listing the connected devices via Freebox Connect (section “Devices”). Some objects (cameras, thermostats) require physical access to re-enter a WiFi password, complicating the maneuver if the device is installed high up or in a false ceiling.
Criteria for a robust WiFi password
- Minimum length of twelve characters, a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters.
- Avoid logical sequences (birth dates, first names, street names) that appear in brute-force attack dictionaries.
- Do not reuse a password already used on another online service, even partially.
- Prefer a passphrase (a sequence of unrelated words) to combine robustness and ease of memorization.
On the Freebox Ultra, WPA3 encryption can be activated. It strengthens protection against interception attacks, but some older devices do not support it. Check the compatibility of your devices before switching from WPA2 to WPA3, or risk losing the connection on the oldest terminals.
Resetting Freebox Ultra WiFi: last resort and consequences
A complete reset of the Freebox Ultra (via the recessed button at the back of the Server, held for several seconds) restores the factory WiFi key, the one printed on the label. All customized network settings disappear: renamed SSID, disabled WiFi bands, MAC filtering, guest network configuration.
The reset does not affect the Free subscriber account or the associated TV services. However, the router configuration (port forwarding, static DHCP leases, firewall rules) resets to zero. On a home network with NAS equipment or local servers, this loss can require several hours of reconfiguration.
Before reaching that point, the Free subscriber area or Freebox Connect are sufficient in the vast majority of cases to recover or replace the active key without touching the other settings of the box.
