The Myth of the "Magic Machine"

"Can't you just connect my car to that machine that will tell you  exactly what is wrong with the vehicle and how to fix it?"

This is a common Myth in the auto repair industry.  True, the diagnostic equipment has evolved by leaps and bounds, but is not the Star Trek age...yet!

Today's modern computer-controlled vehicles are truly into the digital age.  There may be as many as 11 computers controlling everything from the transmission to the climate control system.  Tracking down a problem and determining the process needed to repair the vehicle is still done the old fashioned way.  A technician has to gather data by using his/her senses to see, feel, hear and smell, then collect the vehicle's stored data, and determine what course of action/repairs need to be done. The vehicle's on-board computers have the capability of recording the codes that caused a check engine light to come on.  These codes are used to determine what component or system MAY be affected.  That is when testing is done with the best pieces of diagnostic test equipment available in the shop:  The Technician's Expertise.

THERE IS NO SO-CALLED ONE MAGIC MACHINE THAT CAN TELL YOU WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOUR VEHICLE!!!

WORRIED ABOUT THE HIGH PRICE OF GAS?

TRY THESE GAS SAVING TIPS
With the extremely high prices of gas today, all vehicles today need your utmost attention to get the most mileage out of your vehicle.  Some of the more common causes of poor gas mileage include low tire pressure, fuel type, aggressive driving habits, outside temperature, misaligned wheels, worn spark plugs, dirty fuel system and fluid maintenance levels.

Low tire pressure can affect gas mileage tremendously, as it takes much more energy to push a soft tire down the road that a firm one.  Wheel alignment is also critical.  If your tires are toed in or out, it takes more effort to push the car down the road than  if the tires are aligned straight ahead. Octane can have some effect. An engine that is prone to engine pinging will run better with higher octane fuel.  The only problem is that with today's modern cars, you may not even hear the pinging sound from the engine.  The engines have a knock sensor that automatically retards the ignition timing in the event of pinging. This can in turn reduce your gas mileage without you even knowing the engine was pinging.  Some vehicles run better on high octane fuel and you may not notice any difference in power but it will eliminate the pinging problem and the ignition timing will be advanced more so that the gas mileage will be better. The driver can affect mileage the most by aggressive driving such as starting and stopping fast.  Each of must also manage our maintenance schedules for our vehicles.  A car in need of maintenance will require more fuel as will a car that is driven during extreme cold temperatures.  A little knowledge goes a long way in providing better gas mileage for your vehicle. When driving at highway speeds, roll your windows up for better fuel economy.  The drag created by the windows being down can reduce your fuel mileage by 1% or more!
